The Sweeper

The Sweeper was commissioned by Walk the Plank for Manchester Day Parade 2012. Inspired by the paintings of LS Lowry, the woman wears early 20th century mill worker’s clothes complete with a canvas apron, adorned with Andrew’s own version of one of this Northern artist’s famous ‘matchstick’ mill-scapes.

The figure, with animated head and arms holding a giant broom puppeteered in a sweeping action, paraded with a choreographed group of young people from Cornerstones, Manchester, in a section illustrating the ‘clean-up’ after the riots of 2011.
